I thought I'd let you know about one of the most expensive mistakes I ever made and something I wish I'd discovered MUCH earlier than I actually did!

It's that you should NEVER EVER create a product without selling it first.

Because by doing this you're almost putting money into the bank before you sit down at the work processor and start tapping away.

When I started in marketing (which was then called 'Business Opportunities') I didn't have a computer. NOBODY had a computer unless they were seriously rich, because they simply weren't available to people like me - people with a normal job and an
average to low income. So when I produced one of my first products it cost me a small fortune to put it together, get it printed up and send it out.

It was a small, 30-page booklet (A4 paper folded in half) about how to advertise for free. It was aimed at people just like me, who wanted to start up a small home-publishing venture from home, but couldn't afford to pay for advertising.

I typed it out on an electronic word processor and got a few hundred copies printed up. It looked bloody awful but at the time I was both excited and proud
of my new project. I placed some free ads (using my own techniques) in the Biz Opportunities magazines and waited for the money to roll in. After a couple of weeks I started to worry. It had cost quite a bit to put print up my booklet and only one cheque had arrived.

Why? Because I hadn't sold it first.

I had presumed that there were many people in the same boat as me who wanted to be able to advertise their products for nothing at a time when advertising was very expensive.

There was no real Internet and most Business Opportunities were offline and consisted of paper and ink not binary code.

So why didn't it sell? I'd got my market wrong.

There were many people who would have LOVED free advertising, but they simply weren't ready for it yet because they hadn't got round to creating any product to advertise! I was jumping the gun by quite a way. If I had done the same thing last week I would be jumping for joy - creating a product and selling virtually none BUT in the process I had stumbled on a wonderful, lucrative market.

I would simply create another product (for people who want to create their own info products) then put up a website, a payment button and spend a month in the Caribbean counting the money. I would have lost nothing but time.

BUT climbing back in our time machine and we can watch Samantha The
Internet Marketing Expert staring at five boxes of un-saleable booklets that had cost hundreds to get printed up. More than my monthly salary at the time actually. Wasn't a nice experience, and it was a very expensive lesson. Lucky I wasn't married at that point. It would have caused a divorce.

You - reading this - are all lucky people. And so am I.

Because
NOW we now live in an age where you can make a great deal of money online without having to spend very much setting it all up.

Quite honestly I don't understand who anyone with an ounce of sense would set up a new offline business- a car sales dealership - a corner shop - an advertising agency - all of which take tens of thousands to start up, when they could start an online business for virtually no risk whatsoever.

I can write an e-book, test the market and put together a website in a short space of time. If it doesn't sell a single copy I'm maybe down $5 dollars in monthly hosting fees, and the time it took me. If it does sell (which it should if I've done your research right) I can make thirty thousand dollars or more in a few hours.

Some friends came round for lunch a little while ago. As they arrived I was pretending to work with my laptop in the garden, but was really enjoying watching my son giggle with delight as he followed his rabbit around the garden. After a while we ate a long lunch, enjoying catching up with each other and generally just relaxing.

In the afternoon we went for a stroll through the town, past the churchyard, bought a bottle of wine and returned home. Our friends (husband and wife team) run a very successful 'real world' business. They're very comfortably off in terms of income, and are very successful at what they do.

Here's the point of the story.

During lunch, while we were walking off the meal and while enjoying a glass of wine, they took no less than EIGHT phone calls to their mobile with problems from their office. At times they apologised and had to make calls to sort various things out, and make sure others were running to plan.

In the same space of time I didn't think about work once and made over $300 from my various websites. Now that's not a great deal of money I know but it plopped into my inbox over the course of about 5 hours and I didn't have to do anything except enjoy my meal. So stand back and look at the potential of this weird and wonderful
thing we call the Internet. You can set up a business for very little financial risk, and if it doesn't work set up another, then another until you find one that does.

Once it's set up all you need to do is set up a PayPal button, and sort out an instant download page - BANG! - You've got an automated business that will make money for you while you s sleep, eat, watch TV or whatever else you feel like doing.

We are in a GOLDEN age. This has never been possible for the common man before, so make use of it. Act on it. If you think that making money online is difficult (and there's no doubt it is until you've got the hang of it OR someone shows you exactly how to do it), imagine what it would be like if someone suddenly pulled the plug and we all had to use typewriters, corrections fluid and photocopiers to put reports together. Then we had to mail out hundreds of letters to potential buyers at HUGE
cost, not knowing if we would see any return at all.

Not a nice thought - makes you appreciate the Internet.
