I've been immersing myself in celebrity culture over the
past few weeks.
No, I'm not going to become Internet Marketing's answer
to Perez Hilton...
I've been reading a book called Celebrity, Inc. by Jo
Piazza and it's a fascinating account about how famous
people make money...
Regardless of whether they have any actual talent or not.
One chapter is devoted to pretty-boy actor Ashton
Kutcher, who became the first Twitter user to reach one
million followers in 2009.
It turns out Kutcher is one smart cookie and nothing
like the lovable-but-dumb slacker he often portrays in
his forgettable movies.
In fact, there's a lot we can learn from him and
implement in our own businesses.
Such as:
1. Know Where The Money Is Coming From
Kutcher was once asked by Fast Company magazine what
scared him.
He replied:
"When I have a conversation with someone and they say,
'I'm not worried about monetization yet'"
Celebrities are used to being well compensated for their
time...
So should you be.
2. Build A List
Kutcher's entire strategy to make money online boiled
down to this:
He would leverage his celebrity status to obtain a large
number of followers in social media then sell himself as
a distribution platform for brands to sell their product
to them.
You may not be able to build a list into the millions...
But a fanatical subscriber base of thousands, tens or
even hundreds of thousands is a real possibility.
3. Get Intimate With Your Subscribers
It's not just about a list...
It's about the relationship you have with it.
One way to build a stronger rapport is to give your
subscribers a "behind-the-scenes" glimpse at your life.
Kutcher did this through a "reality" web series based on
the day-to-day running of his company, Katalyst.
Some episodes may have been a bit goofy, even bordering
on the ridiculous...
But it gave fans that intimacy they craved.
You could do that, right?
4. Follow Up... Relentlessly
Kutcher tirelessly promoted his web series to his
millions of Twitter followers...
And his sponsors were delighted with the results.
You see, informing your subscribers about a product or
service once is not enough.
It's why I mail out every single day... it gets results.
If it's good enough for a multi-millionaire Hollywood
star, then it's good enough for me.
