| Basic Tips for Boosting Search Engine Rankings Posted: 26 May 2012 11:38 AM PDT When it comes to search engine optimization, the one thing that everybody needs to realize is that it’s an ongoing process. You have to start somewhere, but as long as you are maintaining an online presence there will rarely (pretty much never) be an end to the process. Search engines are constantly going through changes, updates, and upgrades, and as a result the techniques for utilizing their algorithms changes at the same time. For the time being though, there are a few SEO basics that have remained unchanged almost since SEO was first conceptualized. Add a Sitemap When search engines “crawl” a page, they move through the links on the page in a linear fashion. That is, they go to one page, follow a link to another, follow a link on that page to somewhere else, and so on. The fewer times they have to traverse a link to get to all the pages on your site, the better it will be for you. A sitemap is a single page that lists all the other main pages on the site, along with a link to each one. When crawlers reach the sitemap, they can easily get to every other important part of the site without heading off in too many random directions. Overall, this ease of travel makes it easier to rank your site, and therefore provides a potential boost in rankings. Stay Away from Flash Flash looks really cool. That’s why millions of people have been adding it to their sites over the past few years. However, in terms of SEO it doesn’t help you out one bit. Crawlers can’t read Flash the same way they can read HTML or Java, so it’s more difficult for them to rank the site, and they may never end up going to all the pages. If a page isn’t crawled, it can’t be ranked. Of course, you can’t deny that Flash does have a very positive visual impact, so if you’re dead set on using Flash on your home page or landing page, you can at least provide some text and a few appropriate links on the page below the Flash portion. Choose A Simple URL Last but not least, your URL is extremely important in terms of who can physically find your site and how the search engines see it. It should be simple and uncluttered, allowing visitors to easily remember it, and it should also contain at least one major keyword for your website.
