When you approach marketing from that perspective you set yourself up for failure. You set up a conflicting relationship between yourself and your prospective customers because you are assuming that they don't want what you are offering, and that you must use tactics or tricks to convince them that they need your product or service. That approach will give you nothing but frustration. It will actually repel prospects, not attract them. Here is a much more powerful concept of marketing: 'Marketing is about helping people get what they want.' If you are helping someone get what they want, there is no conflict. It's only when you are trying to get them to accept something that they don't want that conflict arises. So where do 'The Searchers' enter this equation? You already know that people love to buy things they want. They buy cars, food, homes, clothes, CD players, movie tickets, auto insurance, books, toys, cameras, lawn care services, etc. One of the primary steps in a person's buying sequence is to 'search' for the product or service that they want. Your prospects turn on their Radar to find what they want Once someone decides that they want something, they go into what we call 'search' mode. They actually develop a special, powerful radar that searches for and detects any information related to the product or service that they are considering. For instance, after we had built our new home a few years ago, we had to decorate and buy many new pieces of furniture. At one point we decided to buy a set of bar stools for our kitchen counter. Immediately our mental radar went to work. Ads for bar stools that had been invisible to us before, now jumped off the newspaper pages. We began asking our friends where they had found their bar stools. Can you relate? Haven't you done this hundreds, even thousands of times? Every consumer goes into 'search' mode when they want something -- and, as a business owner, this is your ideal opportunity to help them in their search. As we were driving home one day we noticed a large sign on a store that we had never noticed before. The sign said in large red letters 'BAR STOOLS -- Hundreds in stock!' Do you think that sign got our attention? You bet it did. Within a few minutes we were in the showroom 'searching' for the perfect bar stools for our home. First we were searching for businesses that sold bar stools. Next we were searching for the style of bar stools that we wanted. We found the perfect set in this showroom and bought them. Our search was over. When you sell to 'The Searchers,' you must first understand what they are searching for, and then help them find it -- at your business. Sometimes business owners opt for clever or creative marketing approaches that actually obscure what they are selling -- start looking more closely at the ads all around you and ask yourself if you can tell what is being offered by the billboard, ad, flyer, etc. You may be very surprised at what you find. Don't ever be obscure, be perfectly clear. Prospects search for information People don't only search for the products or services you sell, often they search for 'information' related to those products or services. If that is what they are searching for, then help them find it -- at your business. One critical aspect of this concept is to select a product or service that thousands, or millions, of people are searching for. That way you will always have enormous potential for success. My wife, Maria and I, designed our business around two themes: marketing and organizing. We chose those two themes because we have a great deal of experience in them, but more importantly because there are literally millions of people 'searching' for ways to better market their businesses, or to better organize their businesses, homes, and lives. Select a product or service that already has thousands or, even better, millions, of people searching for it, and your road to success will be a lot smoother. If you sell a product or service that many people want, then at any given time there are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of people 'searching' for what you have to offer. Your objective should be to help them find you! Imagine the difference between selling to people who are actually searching for what you provide as opposed to trying to 'convince' people to want what you are selling. The difference is enormous. It's much, much easier to make a decent living when you learn to sell to 'The Searchers.'
