10 Responsive Design Tools

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 12:45 PM PDT

There are many tools and technologies that make creating a perfect website easier for users at any level. At the same time, web design has become more complicated because of the many browsers and devices that can access a website – including mobile devices with varying screen resolutions and sizes. What looks like a beautiful, easy to navigate site in your browser can be completely non-functioning on another person's iPhone. Fortunately, there are many tools to create a cross-technology, responsive website that lets you see how your site looks in different devices without testing it on the device itself.

  1. ResponsivePX allows you to quickly test a website at different widths and heights that you can customize.
  2. Responsinator is a quick and easy way to see what your site looks like in Kindle, iPhone, iPad and Android devices in both portrait and landscape views. It doesn't require a download – just type in the website address on the Responsinator website.
  3. RWD Demonstration is similar to Responsinator. It shows views in iPhone, iPad and desktop. Views are not as clearly labeled, so it takes some familiarity with the site to use it correctly.
  4. Resize My Browser is an online tool that lets you resize your current browser to set and custom presets. It shows screen resolutions for 15 different devices and takes the guesswork out of figuring out what size various devices are. This is a handy tool for seeing your site in a standard browser while comparing it to other device sizes at the same time.
  5. Protofluid is a downloadable tool that is available for purchase. It offers nearly 100 views, a one-click launch and the ability to Tweet results and views.
  6. With Bricss you can select 6 predefined device sizes and add as many custom sizes as you wish. The results are shown on one page. It allows you to see only the results you wish to test in one browser.
  7. Screenqueri.es is a more comprehensive tool that shows a website view in specific device interfaces. More than 25 devices are featured, and there's also a tool to save a snapshot so that you can work out problems.
  8. Resizer is a tool that you can add to your bookmarks toolbar. It includes dimensions for different tablet, desktop and mobile devices and is available as a Chrome extension.
  9. Screenfly shows views on various mobile devices and tablets. It also provides a television and various desktop resolution views.
  10. Responsive allows you to see the site at different resolutions, on the same screen. It does not show specific devices, but screen resolutions ranging from a small phone to an iPad. It's a great way to see multiple views of your site while it's in development without switching to different modes.

Since most of these sites provide the same type of tools, it takes some exploring to find the one that meets your needs and is the most comfortable to use. Once deployed, it will be a valuable first step in making sure your website looks good in any view.

Why Have Infographics Become So Popular?

In the modern world the importance of making an instant impact can not be overstated enough. The ability of infographics to do this is probably the biggest reason for their popularity.

Presenting Facts Concisely

Infographics are a way of presenting important facts in a concise fashion through a mixture of images and text. This makes it easier to digest notable facts, and to do so more quickly than when reading an article of several hundred words. Reading a long article can appear daunting for someone searching for information, and needing to find that information quickly. Because images with text can be absorbed instantly, it’s no surprise that infographics appeal to so many net users.

The Popularity of Sharing Infographics

On the internet, sharing images has always been popular, and this is another advantage that infographics have over text only information. In social media a lot of information can be passed around, and often, purely because of time issues, images will attract people’s attention more than text that people don’t have time to read.

Link Advantages

Another plus in the favour of infographics is if and when they contain a link, which leads back to the website the infographic originates from. If the infographic is easy to share and widely shared then this will boost the page ranking of the website in search engines. This fact alone encourages an increase in infographics to not only present facts, but to help boost the popularity of a website.

Advertising

Infographics can also act as quickfire tutorials on many subjects, or to promote products. Advertisers have not been slow in realizing the benefits of utilizing the power of infographics, and an appealing infographic can end up being spread on the internet. Consequently, a product can be advertised freely. Because infographics are relatively new, this can work as an advantage for companies. When presenting a product to a public that has grown up with television, radio, magazine, and newspaper advertising, it requires something special in those mediums to grab people’s attention. Advertising in an infographic has a freshness by comparison.

A Good Way of Presenting Statistics

A popular way of using infographics is to publish statistics. This can work really well when trying to get across election results. Political infographics can include detailing each party’s share of the vote, what area saw their highest share of the vote, and how the sexes voted. Statistics can also be used in infographics, when detailing the results of polls, which can range from favourite TV shows to favourite pop stars. Statistics in infographics will work well as an educational tool, too, which can be effective when presenting information about history, geography, and science.

Interactive Is the Future

Interactive seems to be the future of infographics. Static infographics can give out a lot of information quickly, but interactive infographics will engage people more. Interactive infographics will be more of a time-consuming experience, but will surely become as popular, if not more so, than the original static type of infographic.
