| 6 Excellent Lessons On Building Your Rocking Life & Business: The Story Of Marie Forleo Posted: 23 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT
Today I want to share more about Marie, her story, her business, and how you can get some incredible free training from her this week about building your own thriving online business. Whether you’re new to online, or already have experience and presence there, Marie’s on the planet to help you get your message out in a more clear, confident and unique way, while building a business that truly allows you to live life on your terms. I LOVE stories of people who made the transition from traditional work to doing what they are truly meant to be doing in the world, and Marie definitely has one of those stories. Let me tell you a bit about that first so if you aren’t familiar with her story already, you’ll know you’re in good hands checking Marie out, while also learning some key lessons on getting into your Sweet Spot from hearing about her personal evolution. Let’s start with where Marie’s story ended up as of this writing: a multi-million dollar, socially conscious business that teaches people how to turn their biggest dreams into real-world business results, best-selling book in 11 languages, 4 top-selling DVD’s, a following of over 50,000 weekly subscribers, and a hilarious and practical weekly web TV show. Marie was interviewed by Tony Robbins for his New Money Masters DVD training program, and was invited by Sir Richard Branson to teach at his Branson Center for Entrepreneurship in South Africa. Cool, right? Now check out her journey to get here, and the lessons I took away in learning about her story. Marie’s career started on Wall St. on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Though that would have been a very lucrative path, she “just knew” it wasn’t for her and left.
Armed with the knowing that she had ‘”a passion for creativity and business”, Marie next went to the magazine publishing industry, working first for Gourmet magazine, and then for Mademoiselle magazine. They seemed like they might have satisfied her two major passions, yet her big a-ha in each case was that she simply didn’t want to end up being her boss.
Marie knew she wanted to do something that she believed in, and while she was still working at Mademoiselle, she read an article about a new field called “life coaching.” It immediately lit her up and felt like it “clicked.” She enrolled in coach training, and studied nights while working by day at the magazine.
One of Marie’s defining moments came when she received an offer, while still at Mademoiselle and taking her coaching program, to work at the pinnacle of all fashion magazines: Vogue. The proverbial fork in the road. What do you think she did? You guessed it: she turned the carrot down, quit Mademoiselle magazine and started her coaching business. All this with no connections, no savings, and thousands of dollars in debt she still had from her education.
Marie hustled as many new coaching clients as she could, slowly building her coaching practice, while bartending and doing side jobs to help keep her afloat financially. All the while, she was also studying about online business and marketing. Marie realized that, while all “expert” advice she was studying said to narrow down to one niche, it wasn’t the right thing for her at that time or stage of development. She had multiple passions, including hip hop, fitness, marketing, writing and speaking, and Marie gave herself permission to explore all of those. She had started taking hip hop classes without previous dance training, and over the course of the next four years, ended up teaching hip hop classes, becoming a choreographer, becoming a producer at MTV, and selling multiple top-selling fitness DVD’s. She also became a Nike Elite dance athlete, and after a broken engagement, wrote her best-selling book Make Every Man Want You: How To Be So Irresistible You’ll Barely Keep From Dating Yourself!
Slowly over time, Marie built her online business to what she does now: helping entrepreneurs understand and leverage online marketing to build unique and authentic businesses that provide time and location freedom, while also making positive local and global impact. Marie is about to start this year’s Rich, Happy and Hot B-School training program in which she teaches the exact blueprint she used herself in building her own business. She has created a series of incredibly content-rich free videos that outline the entire business-building blueprint which you can access here. You can also sign up for Marie’s regular newsletter at her web site, marieforleo.com, and with your subscription you’ll also receive her weekly Marie TV episodes – all of which are chock-full of incredible and practical tips and tricks to create the life and business that thrill you. David Siteman Garland, host of The Rise To The Top web TV show (one of my faves too) recently interviewed Marie on his show. You can check out that interview here. So much good stuff!! Marie’s the best in the world at what she does, and she’s generous with her knowledge. Take advantage of these priceless and free opportunities to learn from her. | Posted: 23 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT This was sort of shocking, at least to me: I was talking to a religious leader, someone who runs a congregation. She made it clear to me that on many days, it’s just a job. A job like any other, you show up, you go through the motions, you get paid. I guess we find this disturbing because spiritual work should be real, not faked. But isn’t your work spiritual? I know doctors, lawyers, waiters and insurance brokers who are honestly and truly passionate about what they do. They view it as an art form, a calling, and an important (no, an essential) thing worth doing. In fact, I don’t think there’s a relationship between what you do and how important you think the work is. I think there’s a relationship between who you are and how important you think the work is. Life’s too short to phone it in. Featured Photo Credit: scragz |

I borrowed the question from one of my favorite books. In her 1936 work, “Wake Up and Live,” Dorothea Brande said the following: “Always your first question to yourself should be, ‘What would I be doing now if it were really impossible to fail?’” When she asked herself this question, her own life changed forever. I won’t spoil the surprise. You can get the book for yourself, which is available as a free (and legal) Pdf download from many sources. Just Google it. It is a quick yet impactful read. Tania’s TransformationTania is the ultra-professional mentor of our new Toastmasters chapter. Her job is to show us how to run the meetings and to offer constructive criticism. Tania was the first to volunteer to take on this question and what happened next was nothing short of amazing. Instead of her usual straightforward, yet warm presentation style, Tania transformed into a little girl right before our eyes. She smiled big and looked up at the ceiling as she swayed from side to side. Clearly, the picture in her head was one she had seen many times before. Tania said she would be a performer. She grew up taking dance and singing lessons as a child and starred in a number of plays and stage performances. She even went on to tell us about the “tons” of comments she gets on her Facebook posts because she really knows how to attract people. Perhaps her leadership role in Toastmasters is her way of fulfilling at least part of this lifelong dream. Then before we knew what hit us, Tania did something totally out of character. She began mimicking Beyoncé moves as she described how awesome she would look on stage! Mind you, Tania is a 43-year-old mother of 2, but in that moment a star was born and she took us all along for the ride. Marwah Starts Her Dream BusinessNext we have Marwah, an American-born Egyptian lawyer. She said she always wanted to have her own business, and she knows exactly the type of business she wants. She would like to create a transit system in Egypt just for women. According to her, women get harassed on public buses quite often, and she feels there is a need for such a service. Marwah did something similar to Tania. She became animated with her hand movements as she described how she would go to the bank, get a huge loan and start the business of her dreams. The entrepreneur in me just couldn’t help it. I blurted out, “That is a fantastic idea!” What I found interesting about Tania and Marwah is their dreams were not at all outside the realm of possibility. Not like a 5′ tall fifty year old who wants to be a member of the NBA. Our greatest ambitions are rooted in something we once believed was possible. However, something happened to that, somewhere along the way. Self Imposed LimitationsDoes Marwah really need a “huge loan” from a bank to start working on her dream business? Of course not! No need for a fleet of cabs or buses either. Why not start with one small vehicle to test the concept? This can be accomplished by pooling together a small group of investors and purchasing a reliable used car. Simpler yet is to write down a brief description of the business and how it would work. There are a number of simple, yet significant first steps she can take. Instead, she has convinced herself that starting this business would be a massive undertaking nearly impossible to pull off. What about Tania? What prevents her from dusting off her dancing shoes and joining an amateur theatre? How about posting performances to YouTube? Or how about something as simple as joining a dance class? Again, simple yet significant first steps. If this seems a bit far out, think back on a time when you were faced with a situation where failure was not an option. A time when you had to succeed because the stakes were so high. You somehow achieved what, at the beginning, seemed impossible. Something magical happens when a person puts themselves on notice and flat-out refuses to fail. Unfortunately, most only tap into this magic potion during times of extreme emergencies. I describe one such example in a post on my personal blog. Be Like a Toys R Us KidRemember the famous Toys R Us jingle from the 80s? “I don’t want to grow up ’cause baby if I did, I couldn’t be a Toys R Us kid!” The song is playing in my head as I type this and I love it. Why? Because to a child nothing is impossible. One week they want to be an astronaut. The next they want to be a fireman or a policeman. The next week they want to be all three! That is, until the world gets its hands on them and tells them to be more realistic. Most of us take that advice. Those who do not, go on to become the Jobses, Jay-Z’s, and Brandes of the world. From now on, every time you see that Toys R Us commercial and hear the catchy tune, think back to this post and the dream you gave up for so many years. Then, ask yourself the question, what practical step can I take today to make this a reality? Better still is this question, “What would I do if it were impossible to fail?” Photo Credit: Stock.XCHNG |
