Posted: 27 Sep 2012 08:39 AM PDT Hey hubzers, So I am 42 years old and have been dealing with weight issues since I was about 33 and sitting on the computer all day. I have done many different diets over the years…gone vegan a couple times…vegetarian and as I did do OK, nothing was consistent and helped me stay trim and healthy. Well, 2 weeks ago I went to the park with my wife and 3 dogs and after only about 2 hours of walking and playing I was winded and ready to go home and it was a beautiful day and none of the girls were even close to being ready to head home…so I told my wife right then and there that when I got home I was going to do some research and find out the BEST thing I could do for myself to get back in shape and healthy again… So that whole night and into the next day I did a ton of research and read ingredients…looked at testimonials and all kinds of information, and then I stumbled upon the Body by Vi 90 Day Challenge. I read that over 100,000 new people are starting this thing EVERY month…so I really started digging into the information and was sold. Especially when I saw my favorite boxer Roy Jones Jr. was part of it and Hulk Hogan. I mean these are 2 VERY healthy dudes…so I decided that is what I was going to do… So I got started this last Monday and am on my 3rd day. I am going to keep track of my journey for all to see so that YOU can help me stay on track, and if any of you want to join us, PLEASE feel free. Leran more about the challenge at http://foster.myvi.net/challenge and I hope YOU can join us. Watch for more posts from me about my progress. But just for fun, here is my awesome before image: My goal is to lose 42 lbs in 90 days replacing 2 meals and doing a LOT of exercise. So until next time… Have YOU tried diets that have worked, and or not worked? |
The Rhetoric of Social Media: Facebook Posted: 27 Sep 2012 03:00 AM PDT We’re here to talk about Rhetoric – specifically the presentation of yourself on Social Media. Today we focus on Facebook. When talking about Rhetoric, it is important we realize what it is. Rhetoric is all-encompassing. It is the language you use and how you use it and how it is received and conceived. Rhetoric is also how you look and how you present yourself. There are five canons of Rhetoric: Invention, Arrangement, Style, Memory, and Delivery which can appeal to Pathos, Ethos, and Logos. Pathos is an appeal to your emotions, Ethos is an appeal to what you see and Logos is an appeal to logic. Invention is what you say, Arrangement is how you order what you’re saying, Style is how you say these things, Memory is the memorization (used in public speaking), and Delivery is how the general message reaches your audience. For the purposes of this article, we will only concern ourselves with Invention, Style, and Delivery. Because Facebook arranges everything in uniform, we won’t be discussing Arrangement. Also, because the information is readily available, there is also no point in discussing Memory. Rhetoric isn’t just the way you look but how and what that look does; what message does it convey? What reaction does your target audience receive? How are you utilizing Facebook to present yourself in the best rhetorical way? Rhetoric in business is big. A business with no rhetorical clout will get eaten up alive by another business who knows how to present themselves. If two businesses with superior marketing skills are competing for a target audience, the one with the better presentation is going to be the one to captivate. Now, before we begin, it’s important to realize the difference between Facebook and Twitter. While they are both similar Social Media networking sites, what they do and what they’re for are different. For perspective, we can relate Twitter to a town-hall debate whereas Facebook is more akin to a friendship. ![]() Twitter. (Image credit: marzolino / 123RF Stock Photo) On Twitter, you do not present a lot of information about yourself. Simply put, Twitter is a constant stream of quick blurbs. Facebook pages proudly display information that make it a more accessible site. You can see what businesses like, causes they represent, and Facebook even manages images in-site, unlike Twitter. Lastly, Facebook is a more visually appealing site than Twitter since Twitter’s purpose is just short text-like updates. So let’s take a look at a few businesses to see how they present themselves and how they captivate their audience using rhetoric. BonobosSimple. Elegant. They don’t present themselves as elitist with their cover photo. They feature two guys with rolled up sleeves which to me says “comfort”. The blues are a cool color that are relaxing as well. There’s nothing overbearing on their page which comes off as inviting. Their About section even includes “And we enjoy the occasional beer” which screams “common man.” Bonobos also links you to their Twitter feed which tells their audience they’re available on the go as well. ClarisonicAt one point, designers use to crowd as much information as possible on a single page. However, we’re now living through a design revolution, a less is more approach. Clarisonic is using this to perfection. A solid, white background, straight lines, three colors that displays efficiency at its best. With white, and I hate to use this word so much, they are presenting themselves as elegant and professional. If you thought Bonobos was simple, Clarisonic beats it hands-down. The downside to this appeal is that customers might find your product to be on the expensive side (look at Apple). However, the upside to it is that you are almost guaranteeing with this look that your product is of high-quality and that a purchase would be worth the leap of faith. Brendan’s Irish PubHere’s an appeal to Pathos like none other. We’ve got an image of the interior of their establishment. They WANT you to come visit. Their lights are green. They’ve got celtic designs and lettering. They’ve got old-fashioned street lamps inside. Without looking anywhere else, I know already what they do: they’re a bar and it looks like it’s a lot of fun. They provide their hours of operation underneath their logo and where they are. Still don’t know where they are? They’ve got a link to a map. Still don’t know what they do? They’ve got photos. They aren’t telling you anything – they’re showing you. And parading it while doing it. When you’ve got a business that speaks for itself, it’s worth just simply stating everything in one simple picture. Brendan’s Irish Pub here has done it. They’re flat-out outgoing and they’ve done it without speaking a simple word. Bravo. What ways are you utilizing rhetoric to appeal to your base?
